SETTING GOALS: A Dames Guide to Goal Setting for 2016


Everyone should set goals in their lives and what better time to set new goals then with the coming of the new year. It gives us something to work for and a sense of accomplishment when our goals are met. Just as important as setting goals in our personal lives, we should also be setting goals for our professional lives, both long and short term. It isn't as much as a "five-year plan" as just setting out to accomplish something important to you and to achieve them. Here are some tips on how to accomplish your goals set in 2016 (and beyond).

Deadlines:

The definition of a goal is "the object of a person's ambition or effort; an aim or desired result." So with that being clearly defined, wouldn't it then make sense to set deadlines on obtaining your goals? A deadline will help push you into action and make you accountable for completing your tasks. My favorite personal example would be the goal of weight loss.  Your goal is to lose 20lbs, and that is a great goal, but unless you say you want to lose 20lbs in two months, you may take liberty to
do it over 5 years, and that wouldn't be entirely productive. Push yourself to succeed and achieve your goals in a proper time frame. It is the same for work. Let’s say you want a new position or perhaps to find a new job, then make a plan. Apply for 3 jobs a day, or make sure your reports are done BEFORE your boss asks for it. Certain goals, especially work related may be outside of your control, however there are always certain actions that can be taken to make them come to reality. So set those deadlines and time frames and stick to them. It will only help you in the long run.


Be Realistic:

I want to be a princess, and what girl wouldn't, but we all know that there is no way that this is going to happen. There is a fine line between shooting for the stars and having completely unrealistic goals. If you are a receptionist, and you want to be a CEO that isn't unrealistic. To do it with no college education, and no ambition then it is never going to happen. Make a plan and make it an obtainable one. Keep in mind serious work needs to be put forth with all seriousness when serious goals are set. Know what your limits are and make sure you don't over extend yourself in the goals you set. 

Write them down: 

Oprah has always said to make a vision board which is a literally a board with all of your goals and dreams posted on there to visually remind you what is important to you and to help you stay focused. This is great advice but you don't have to do arts and crafts to make something stick. Use whatever is
easiest for you to write them down. Make sure to keep adding and revising it. Also, make it a point to revisit it once a month so that you know you are on the right track, or change something that is no longer relevant to you. With work goals, things should be written down all the time to help keep your tasks in line anyways, however these goals will be something more than just your day to day. Maybe you have a stack of paper on your desk that you know needs to be gone through but you just can't find the time do get to it. Make a plan to look at five pieces of paper a day. Mark your Outlook calendar once a month with any goal that you set for yourself and stick to them.


Mind over matter:

A positive, confident, self-loving mind set can help you achieve any goals you want.  You need to do what is needed to work on yourself and keep the most posited mental attitude possible. But keep in mind as stated before, you need to be realistic. If you’re having a bad day you don't need to walk
around smiling like an idiot, but don't hold onto the frustration for long either. Once it has passed, stop and use that energy to problem solve and construct a plan that is going to improve or fix the situation. The best part is that we get to decided what side of the bed we are going to wake up on and with every day only lasting 24 hours we know that it will come to an end. Then we will have the opportunity to have yet another fresh start to a new day. At work or in our private lives you MUST have great mind set to achieve the goals your put forth for yourself. Once you set your goals, set your mind.
